Susan Renda has been a nurse for over 40 years. Her career began at the bedside with acutely ill patients and then in advanced practice as a nurse practitioner, certified diabetes educator, and nursing faculty. In all settings, she has brought a passion for education, as every moment with patients and students can be a teaching moment. As a nurse practitioner and diabetes educator at the Johns Hopkins Diabetes Center, Dr. Renda’s collaboration with other members of the health care team has involved her in initiatives to improve diabetes care and education for individuals and communities locally and globally. Her interest continues in improving access to diabetes care, helping clinicians prevent and manage chronic illness, and delivering culturally competent patient education in creative ways. As faculty, she guides advanced practice students and their clinical preceptors to help them meet the challenge of providing comprehensive patient care in a variety of settings.
