Include and value everyone because everyone is different

Building a better environmentThe Johns Hopkins School of Nursing works to create an environment in which all members of the school community feel welcomed and supported and that those with differing perspectives and contributions are not only sought out but know they are equally valued. Drawing upon experiences from past DEI initiatives, the Diversity & Inclusion Committee brings together faculty, staff, and students from the JHSON community who feel called to participate.

The committee welcomes contributions from its members and the JHSON community at large. Sub committees are formed as needed to address both short- and long-term issues that have been identified as relevant to its charge.

Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

To assist in cultivating an intentionally welcoming and inclusive campus environment with opportunities to learn and work in a diverse range of settings, JHSON established the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Gloria Ramsey, JD, RN, FNAP, FAAN, was appointed to serve as inaugural Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to further the school’s diversity and its impact on innovation, education, practice, research, and service. This role provides strategic vision and leadership for diversity and inclusion activities at JHSON and collaborates on initiatives across the university and health system. It also serves as a resource for people in the JHSON community to address areas of success and issues of concern related to diversity and inclusion.


Sydnee’s story

"I really appreciated the learning experience. It was my first time being a mentor and passing on my knowledge. I really enjoyed getting to know Temvelo more, and I feel like we learned a lot from each other just about life, navigating our professional trajectory, and more.

Along with this program, I joined the American Marketing Association’s mentoring program and the cross-Johns Hopkins Communications working group, along with the #HigherEdSocial community, where I have learned a lot. They all go together for me, I got something important out of all of them. The value of the program is about expanding one’s vision, seeing opportunities, getting to know oneself and others, and, supporting someone else’s success.”

Faculty Mentoring Program

We are committed to faculty recruitment, retention and success. JHSON faculty have the opportunity to participate in a formal mentoring program to support success. Mentoring programs such as the Nurse Faculty for the Future (NFF) are also available to faculty. To provide resources for ongoing faculty, JHSON has membership and access to the National Center for Faculty Development Diversity (NCFDD). This organization is responsible for professional development, training, and mentoring of students and faculty members.

Other mentoring activities provided to faculty include:

  • Individual coaching
  • Each faculty member is matched with an individual mentor
  • Monthly Assistant Professor Development Group meetings
  • Quarterly meetings with Associate Professors as a group
  • Access to university mentoring activities including K-to-R Transitions

Staff Mentoring Program

As a school community, we are committed to increasing diversity in myriad ways and to pursue an equitable policy of access and opportunity, one that offers all faculty, students, and staff the best possibility to excel. A staff mentoring program was developed in 2019 to engage staff looking to advance their career skills. Staff are paired with JHSON leadership, faculty, or staff whose roles connect with their professional goals.
