Health Inequities
Unjust and preventable differences between segments of the population in the quality or outcomes of health care and health policy. Such differences—for nearly all metrics of health care access, health system performance and population health—are long-standing among ethnically and racially minoritized, socioeconomically disadvantaged and otherwise marginalized communities.
IPS defines solutions-oriented approaches to eliminating health inequities as having four components:
- Designed with the goal to eliminate specific health inequities, for example, racial or ethnic HIV inequities among men who have sex with men in New York City. The degree to which such specifically targeted goals are attained is much easier to evaluate than more abstract goals to “advance health equity.”
- Aims to identify the mechanisms of inequity drivers and leverage points to be targeted by applied interventions; this is in contrast to work that primarily describes inequities.
- Oriented toward comprehensive and multilevel intervention approaches designed to eliminate inequity drivers that operate both inside and outside of the clinical healthcare system.
- Characterized by a commitment to scaling research to achieve impact beyond just scientific recognition.
Affiliates help advance IPS’s mission by:
- Informing evidence-based policy and program development.
- Demonstrating through their work the impact of research, programs and policies designed to end health inequities.
- Participating in research and training initiatives.
- Shaping national conversations through convenings and thought leadership.
- Expanding our reach through strategic networks.
