Before You Apply

The IPS Affiliates Program welcomes individuals whose work aligns with our mission to eliminate health inequities as a strategy to fix the broken U.S. health system. The program is not suited for work that broadly addresses health disparities or equity promotion, though we value that work. We seek collaborators whose efforts are rooted in actionable, systems-oriented approaches to dismantling the unjust structures that deny certain populations the possibility of achieving their optimum health.

At IPS, we define health inequity as: unjust and preventable differences between segments of the population in the quality or outcomes of health care and health policy. Such differences—for nearly all metrics of health care access, health system performance and population health—are long-standing among ethnically and racially minoritized, socioeconomically disadvantaged and otherwise marginalized communities. For more information, read “Ending Unequal Treatment In The United States Health Care System”, Health Affairs Forefront, June 26, 2024.

To become an IPS Affiliate, applicants must demonstrate that their work aligns with our solutions-oriented approach, which includes:

  1. Targeting specific health inequities, rather than broadly aiming to “advance equity.”
  2. Identifying and addressing the mechanisms and drivers of inequity—not just describing them.
  3. Implementing multilevel interventions that reach beyond the clinical system.
  4. Committing to scale, with research and practice designed for real-world, population-level impact.

If your work aligns with these principles, we welcome your application. If not, we thank you for your interest but respectfully encourage you to seek out affiliations that are better matched to your goals.
