Johns Hopkins School of Nursing Receives HEED Award for Excellence in Diversity

or

The Johns Hopkins School of Nursing (JHSON) has received the 2019 Health Professions Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. It is the second year in a row JHSON has received this national honor recognizing the school’s outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion.

“We are proud to be recognized again for our purposeful dedication to embedding diversity, equity, and inclusion into our mission, education, research, practice, and service,” comments Patricia Davidson, PhD, MEd, RN, FAAN, dean of JHSON.

At JHSON, diversity, equity, and inclusion are embedded into the strategic plan and overall mission, and are the engine for the school’s innovation and success.

“It is our responsibility as a leader in health care to ensure that people from all backgrounds are given the opportunity for health and for their voices to be heard,” adds Gloria Ramsey, JD, RN, FNAP, FAAN, Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. “It’s what we strive to achieve on a daily basis and what will define nursing as we move to the next century.”

Throughout the year, JHSON has lived out its mission for excellence in diversity, equity, and inclusion in joint effort with its robust Diversity and Inclusion Committee. The committee seeks to increase cultural competency skills and diversity of faculty, students, and staff, while providing opportunities for diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, strategies, and feedback. The school also centers on “local to global” educational programs that offer collaborations with students and faculty from across 25 different countries.

Within the faculty population, 29 percent are from racial and ethnic minorities and 12 percent are men. Among the students, 39 percent are from racial and ethnic minorities, and 12 percent are men.

Other diversity highlights from 2019 include: the recognition of Phyllis Sharps, PhD, RN, FAAN, as 2019 Black Nurse of the Year by the Black Nurses Association of the Greater Washington, D.C. Area, Inc.; Ramsey’s receipt of the President’s Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Black Nurses Association; the diversification of education opportunities that includes a nurse anesthesiology program and more online options>; a committed and focused faculty research program in areas of health equity; and numerous articles within the school’s On the Pulse blog that cover diversity, equity, and inclusion topics in relation to the profession.

The school was also recently named a 2019 Best School for Men in Nursing by the American Association for Men in Nursing.

JHSON will participate in the second HEED Award Summit this summer to share with other HEED honorees best practices and successes.
