Focus Forward - When nursing leads, health moves forward. A Johns Hopkins School of Nursing Storytelling Campaign.
Kristen Brown

Led by Kristen Brown, the Center for Simulation & Immersive Learning is redefining how the next generation of nurses are educated. This state-of-the-art environment blends high-fidelity simulation, virtual reality, and digital innovation to mirror the realities of modern care. More than a training space, it’s a catalyst for change—preparing nurses to think critically, lead with confidence, and advance safety and quality in every setting. The Center embodies how technology and teaching converge to shape the future of nursing education..

In South Africa, a Hopkins-led study is transforming how the world thinks about drug-resistant tuberculosis care. The trial proved that nurses can deliver treatment with outcomes equivalent to those of physicians—findings that have already shaped South Africa’s national guidelines and global health practice.

For one Johns Hopkins PhD student working on the project, the research is more than data, it’s a proof of what’s possible when nursing leads systems-level change. Their work reflects the foresight driving the next generation of nurse scientists: turning evidence into policy and reimagining how care is delivered worldwide.

Bonnielin Swenor is shaping a new global standard for disability inclusion in research. Under her leadership, the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing is advancing work toward designation as a World Health Organization Collaborating Center and developing guidelines that will help ensure people with disabilities are meaningfully included in research worldwide.

As one of the few nursing institutions positioned to inform both WHO and NIH recommendations, Hopkins Nursing is demonstrating how true global leadership begins with equity—refocusing research to reflect the full diversity of human experience.
