Resilience Research Projects
Over the course of the 5-year grant, the RESILIENCE Center will fund five projects for intervention development and dissemination. The projects examine caregiving across lifespan in order to emphasize the commonalities across the continuum that could improve our understanding of essential features of interventions that promote health and function for family caregivers. Three are adaptations to CAPABLE, one is an adaptation to the Chicago Parent Program, and one is the development of a new intervention for family caregivers with disabilities.
CAPABLE Care Partner
Timeline: July 2020 – July 2025
CAPABLE Care Partner will formalize the role of participants’ caregivers within the existing program by developing CAPABLE clinician training and caregiver resources. The project team will engage current CAPABLE programs to receive caregiver and participant input on how best to structure and promote caregiver involvement. Once created, the CAPABLE Care Partner components will be piloted to evaluate outcomes related to caregiver strain, outlook and ability to care. Following the project, CAPABLE Care Partner will be disseminated to CAPABLE programs across the country. The scope of this project also includes aggregating data from existing CAPABLE programs to determine contextual factors related to the success of CAPABLE programs.

CAPABLE Family
Timeline: July 2020 – July 2023
The CAPABLE Family Research Study aims to adapt CAPABLE for older adults with mild cognitive impairment and early stage dementia. CAPABLE’s current design is optimized for those with executive functioning and the ability to plan, problem solve, and practice goals independently. Insights from CAPABLE clinicians, older adults with mild cognitive impairment/early stage dementia and care partners are being used to develop a more inclusive CAPABLE model so that those with both functional and cognitive impairment can benefit. Once the new model is refined as part of a Baltimore-based pilot, existing CAPABLE programs will be provided the enhanced materials and training so that they will be able to offer CAPABLE to a broader range of older adults.

Chicago Parent Program: Individualized for Families
Timeline: July 2021 – July 2023
Chicago Parent Program: Individualized for Families aims to develop an effective adaptation of the current program for caregivers of young children with social emotional behavioral disorders (SEBD). The current evidence-based program is a group-based program to strengthen caregiver skills and confidence among families living in poverty. Feedback from existing programs argues for the need to design an individualized caregiver intervention. The team will work with clinician and caregiver consultants to create, pilot, enhance and disseminate CCP-I to its current CPP providers.

Designed With You
Timeline: July 2022 – July 2024
Designed with You will develop a tailored behavioral intervention for caregivers living with mobility, or sensory disabilities who are caring for others with any type of disabilities. Adults with mobility or sensory impairments who also serve as caregivers may face substantial barriers in fulfilling their own health care needs as well as the needs of the care recipients. Through interviews and home observations, the research team will identify the needs of this population and then co-create interventions addressing the caregivers with disabilities within their social, cultural and/or physical environment.
CAPABLE Kids
Timeline: July 2022 – July 2024
In order for children with medical complexity (CMC) to live at home with their families, they require both reliable caregivers and a home that is safe, accessible, and spacious enough to meet their intensive daily care needs. Yet, prior research surveying and interviewing families with CMC in Maryland demonstrates how current housing situations do not promote independence, function, or quality of life (QOL) for either the child or their caregivers. The overarching goal of this multidisciplinary project is to develop and pilot test CAPABLE Kids, an adaptation of the CAPABLE program, to meet the specific housing needs of CMC families and positively impact families by promoting independence, function, and QOL. This project will be conducted in collaboration with Johns Hopkins Pediatrics at Home.

CAPABLE with Primary Care
Timeline: July 2023 – July 2025
CAPABLE with Primary Care seeks to create a single delivery platform for addressing health and function of older adults. Home-based primary care is a high quality, cost effective solution in which physicians and nurse practitioners provide home-based interdisciplinary medical care to patients who are unable to leave their home with or without caregivers. While home-based primary care addresses medical needs, it does not attend to their physical function, which CAPABLE effectively addresses. In partnership with clinicians, patients, and caregivers from JHOME, Hopkins’ home-based primary care program, the research team will create an integrated service delivery model. Once piloted within JHOME, a toolkit will be disseminated for other professional organizations wanting to integrate CAPABLE within home-based care.
