Global Service Learning Opportunities
In an increasingly interdependent global society with shifting health concerns, emerging diseases, and increasing health inequities, all nurses need the skills to address complex global health challenges. Using an interprofessional approach, the JHSON aims to create opportunities for students with a focus on cross-discipline, problem-solving educational offerings to address social, economic, and political factors affecting health systems.
1. Guatemala
- One week in Guatemala with the local NGO Nursing Heart Inc
- Community-based, experiential learning opportunity that will encompass activities including but not limited to health screenings, community health assessments, diabetic foot clinics, and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) educational initiatives. Several of the public health nursing projects that are being completed in Guatemala are direct results of the community health assessments that JHSON students and faculty previously completed in partnership with local Guatemalan nurses, during previous service learning practicums.

2. Nepal Global Health Leadership Program (GHLP)
- Nepal Global Health Leadership Program (GHLP)
- In partnership with the JHU School of Medicine
- 3- 4 weeks in B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences in Ghopa, Dharan, Nepal
- This opportunity allows medical and nursing students to work and learn in a multidisciplinary and interprofessional environment that incorporates expertise from physicians, non-physician providers, nurses, and public health experts at an international site.
- In addition to experiential learning, participants will pursue a scholarly project identified in collaboration with the host institution, such as a quality improvement or educational initiative that can be completed during their time abroad.
- Open to JHSON students (3rd-5th semester MEN students) & JHSOM 3rd and 4th year medical students who have completed core clerkships in Internal Medicine AND Women’s Health OR Emergency Medicine OR Surgery.

Fellowships
Coverdell Peace Corps Fellows Program
The Paul D. Coverdell Fellows Program at the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing works to help returned volunteers pursue a career in nursing and is one of the first fellow’s programs for nursing. Fellows agree to work in the underserved communities of East Baltimore at many of Johns Hopkins’ nurse run clinics through the Community Outreach Program. Fellows may apply to receive a salary for their work in community outreach — although some of the sites are volunteer experiences. By filling out the Paul D. Coverdell Fellows Program Application students are considered for one of the Peace Corps Fellows Scholarships worth $12,500.
