Pathway to PhD Nursing Scholars Program

Overview

Outstanding nurses from diverse backgrounds are invited to become the next generation of nurse scientist-scholars through an intensive, eight-week accelerated summer program to prepare them for nursing PhDs.

The program provides mentorship, resources, networking, and career guidance alongside existing courses and seminars. Participants also engage in unique research opportunities with the school’s outstanding research faculty.

The inaugural year of the program begins in the summer of 2023 and 10 participants will be selected each year. This highly competitive program funds scholars for the entire summer of their participation.

Upcoming Deadline

Summer Entry: January 15, 2024

The Summer 2024 application will open on November 1, 2023.

  • Graduate (or pending graduation) from an accredited Baccalaureate or Master’s Entry Nursing Program

  • Minimum scholastic GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale

  • Two letters of reference attesting to applicant’s academic promise and potential for a PhD

  • Short, written essay responses detailing interest in Pathways Scholars program and research

  • CV or resume

  • Interviews with a Center Director, a PhD program faculty, and a PhD Candidate

  • Indication of interest in working with JHSON Research Centers and their advertised research team opportunities/engagement

  • Submission of an optional supplement to the written essay (e.g., artistic representation, photo project, A/V recorded content) for those who find the written essay does not represent life experience or abilities adequately

  • Pathway Scholars will receive special networking opportunities to welcome them into the JHSON community

  • Scholars will learn about JHU educational/career and social networking opportunities/initiatives

  • Regular social experiences to facilitate cohort-building and community

  • Professional networking activities will include:

    • Research shadowing opportunities

    • Interaction with current students and faculty through Research Honors Program seminars

    • NIH Clinical Center engagement

    • Multiple levels of mentorship from Center Director/faculty mentor/and PhD Candidate program mentors

  • Scholars will join teams of faculty and students who extend beyond JHU through their placement at our well-resourced Johns Hopkins School of Nursing Centers
