Overview
Tammy Slater is the track coordinator for the DNP Adult-Gerontological Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program at the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing. She is an acute care nurse practitioner, and her clinical expertise focuses on the assessment and management of acutely and critically ill adults with cardiovascular disease and complex comorbidities. In 2017 and 2021 she earned the Outstanding Nurse Clinician award from the Johns Hopkins Nursing Alumni Association. Dr. Slater has been named co-chairperson for the 2021-2022 Cardiovascular Nursing Scope and Standards Revision workgroup within the American Nurses Association. Dr. Slater’s scholarship focuses on the assessment and management of individuals with cardiovascular disease, the complexities they experience, and critical updates on current topics such as presyncope, first aid administration and COVID-19 sequelae. She has led efforts to improve the quality of life for this group of patients by incorporating symptom managing strategies with palliative care and support for end-of-life goals. As the PI for a SAMHSA grant, Dr. Slater, and her team integrated opioid-related content in the advanced practice registered nurse curriculum. The enhanced content addresses pain management, safe prescribing practices, and identification and management of opioid use. Additionally, Dr. Slater has led educational opportunities for preceptors who play a crucial role in the professional development of nurse practitioner students.
