Returned Peace Corps Volunteers (RPCVs) who are accepted into the bachelor’s program at the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing are eligible to apply to the Paul D. Coverdell Fellows Program. Applying is simple; just follow these steps:
Apply to Hopkins Nursing
When submitting your application to the bachelor’s nursing degree program at the School of Nursing, indicate that you served in the Peace Corps and attach a description of service. RPCVs receive priority in the admissions process.
Apply to the Peace Corps Fellows Program
The Paul D. Coverdell Fellows Program at the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing works to help Returned Volunteers pursue a career in nursing through bachelor’s level nursing education. Our Fellows agree to work in the underserved communities of East Baltimore at many of our nurse run clinics through the Community Outreach Program. Fellows may apply to receive a salary for their work in Community Outreach — although some of the sites are volunteer experiences.
By filling out the Paul D. Coverdell Fellows Program Application students are considered for one of the $12,500 Peace Corps Fellows Scholarships worth $12,500. Unfortunately the School of Nursing is not able to award Fellows Scholarships to all students who apply. Each year approximately twelve PC Fellows Scholarships are awarded. All RPCV’s are considered Fellows even if they do not receive a scholarship.RPCVs may also apply for the Academic Merit Scholarship which is for half tuition. Applicants cannot receive both the PC Fellows Scholarship and the Academic Merit Scholarship.
Once a student is accepted as a Fellow, they will be informed by the Office of Admissions whether they have been chosen for a $12,500 Paul D. Coverdell Fellows Scholarship.
Apply for Other Financial Support
Even if they do not receive a Paul D. Coverdell Fellows Scholarship, many students receive some financial assistance in the form of need-based scholarships. All students are encouraged to apply for financial aid through the Office of Student Financial Services by the March 1 deadline.
RCPVs who have been accepted to the accelerated program may also fill out a separate application for a Gurtler Scholarship .
In recent years, the School has been able to offer at least one full scholarship to an accelerated student thanks to the generosity of the John R. and Ruth Gurtler Foundation.
