The France-Merrick Foundation of Baltimore, Md. has given $2 million to the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing (JHSON) to fund the expansion of its current Anne M. Pinkard building. Since 1985, the France-Merrick Foundation has given $11 million in donations to JHSON to fund capital projects, and provide student financial support and community health care to those in need.
The expansion will add more than 41,000 sq. ft. of new space to the building’s current 93,290 sq. ft. footprint. The planned five-story addition will provide collaborative spaces, small group study rooms, student lounges, expanded PhD and post-doctorate workspace, and research spaces that contribute to graduate level education.
“France-Merrick’s support of the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing has significantly impacted and transformed the education of our students and the health care outreach we provide to the Baltimore community,” said Patricia M. Davidson, dean of the School of Nursing. “This generous gift will allow us to provide the learning and collaboration space needed for our growing student population.”
Since the building’s opening in 1998, the number of JHSON students has increased from 500 to more than 1,100 currently enrolled in graduate degree programs including the Master of Science in nursing, the PhD and the Doctor of Nursing Practice. With space limitations a concern for the school’s ability to meet the growing need for nurses and educators, the renovation and new construction will also help to strengthen student and faculty recruitment and retention.

Gross, executive director of the France-Merrick Foundation. “We have a shared vision of improving the healthcare of Baltimore and preparing future health care leaders for Baltimore and beyond.”
The award-winning architectural firms of William Rawn Associates and Hord Coplan Macht, Inc. have provided a plan for a dynamic, flexible, and future-oriented space where students and faculty can work together in an active learning environment. Groundbreaking for the expansion is projected to take place in fall 2018, and completion of the renovation is scheduled to follow in approximately 18 months.
