The Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing (JHUSON) will join nurses throughout the eastern seaboard in a commemorative global 2010 International Year of the Nurse (IYN) service at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC on April 25.

Officiated by JHUSON associate professor Cynda H. Rushton, PhD, RN, FAAN, the service will feature Leslie Mancuso, chief executive officer and president of Jhpiego, an international non-profit health organization affiliated with Johns Hopkins University.

The IYN website describes 2010 as “the centennial year of the death of the founder of modern nursing Florence Nightingale (1820-1910).” To celebrate this historic milestone, the 2010 IYN was established to actively involve more than 15 million nurses worldwide in a celebration of commitment to bring health and health education to their communities. IYN also seeks to recognize the contributions of nurses globally and to engage nurses in the promotion of world health.  In collaboration with other global citizens, nurses will demonstrate how nurses advocate for the achievement of these goals.
