The Johns Hopkins School of Nursing (JHSON) received the 2016 Health Professions Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education. As a recipient of the award—which recognizes U.S. nursing, medical, dental, pharmacy, osteopathic, and allied health schools that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion—JHSON will be featured in the December 2016 issue of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine.
“Advancing and supporting a culture of diversity and inclusion are top priorities here at our school,” says Dean Patricia Davidson, PhD, MEd, RN, FAAN. “Our students and faculty offer unique experiences, cultures, and views, and we strive to respect individual perspectives and foster the value of how they work together. We are proud to be recognized as a recipient of this respected award.”
Through a school-wide diversity taskforce, JHSON give students, faculty, and staff opportunities to develop and implement programs and partnerships that strengthen a cohesive and inclusive environment. Various resources and groups such as LGBTQ Life at Hopkins and the Office of Multicultural Affairs provide community members a space to collaborate, share ideas, and further promote the embodiment of various beliefs. Within JHSON, more than 31% of students and 23% of faculty are racial or ethnic minorities.
“The Health Professions HEED Award process consists of a comprehensive and rigorous application that includes questions relating to the recruitment and retention of students and employees — and best practices for both — continued leadership support for diversity, and other aspects of campus diversity and inclusion,” says Lenore Pearlstein, publisher of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. “We take a holistic approach to reviewing each application in deciding who will be named a HEED Award recipient. Our standards are high, and we look for institutions where diversity and inclusion are woven into the work being accomplished every day across their campus.”
