It’s what you might call the domino effect: Diabetes leads to higher risk for stroke. Stroke leads to higher risk for heart disease. And heart disease leads to more deaths globally than any other disease or infection.
Now as new reports indicate a rapidly growing prevalence of diabetes, it’s no wonder Dean Patricia Davidson says these kinds of numbers beg us to examine how we look at healthcare. Chronic conditions like diabetes not only affect the individuals and societies who suffer, but also the healthcare system that has to manage exceeding costs of care.
So what’s the good news? These non-communicable diseases can be preventable and their causes are nearly reciprocal, so if you diminish risk factors for one, you can diminish risk factors for many.
