Community Center Ground Breaking is Friday, October 24
Faculty and students from The Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing will join Mayor Kurt Schmoke and representatives from the city, state and federal governments on Friday, October 24, 1997 at 11 a.m. to break ground for a 1,750 square foot Community Resource Center at Hillside Park Apartments. The Center will house a health suite and other resources for Hillside residents. Renovation efforts at Hillside aim to encourage participation by residents in the operation of the housing complex and to offer other essential human services.
Judith Siegal, President of Landex of Maryland, Inc., a partner with the Housing Authority of Baltimore City in ownership of the complex, says “Creation of this center brings together the best elements in a partnership between Mayor Kurt Schmoke’s goal of neighborhood stabilization and the Housing Authority’s initiatives to forge collaborations between the public and private sectors.”
“We are pleased to be part of this innovative and collaborative effort,” says Dean Sue K. Donaldson, PhD, RN, Dean of the School of Nursing. “Many of the nursing students who will work at Hillside are returned Peace Corps volunteers and bring special talents to an urban project such as this. Under the guidance of our nursing faculty, our students will provide Hillside residents with physical examinations, immunizations, health screenings, referrals, parenting classes, health education classes and other health-related services. We look forward to being part of the Hillside community.”
The 94-unit apartment development will be entirely renovated with modern kitchens featuring new cabinets and counters, dishwashers and disposals. The apartments will be air conditioned and the bedrooms will have new wall-to-wall carpeting.
Directions from downtown Baltimore: Take Lombard Street west which becomes Frederick Road. Turn left on Long Island Avenue. Go one and one-half blocks to 4902 Parkton Court on left.
