Elaine Larson, RN, PhD, FAAN, CIC, a nurse researcher and national leader in the field of infection control, is the first nurse scholar to be named to the Johns Hopkins University Society of Scholars. The society inducts former postdoctoral fellows and junior or visiting faculty at Johns Hopkins who have gained marked distinction in their fields.
Larson served on the faculty of the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing from 1985-1992, first as the M. Adelaide Nutting Chair in Clinical Nursing, and later as the Director of the Center for Nursing Research. She currently is at Columbia University, where she serves as Associate Dean for Research and Professor of Pharmaceutical and Therapeutic Research at the School of Nursing and Professor of Epidemiology at the Mailman School of Public Health. Larson is also the Director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Antimicrobial Resistance, an NIH funded Center at Columbia.
An expert in infection control, Larson is a member of the board of directors of the National Foundation for Infectious Disease and the Report Review Committee for the National Academy of Sciences. She also is the editor of the American Journal of Infection Control. Among her other career accomplishments are:

• Recipient of the first Pathfinder Award (2003) from the Friends of the National Institute of Nursing Research
• Elaine Larson Lectureship endowed by the Association of Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (2002)
• Chair, CDC Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee, 1992-2000
The scholars elected in 2006 will be inducted at a ceremony hosted by Provost Steven Knapp at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, May 24, at Evergreen House. At that time, the new members will be presented with a diploma and a medallion on a black and gold ribbon to be worn with their academic robe. The induction will be followed by a reception and dinner hosted by President William R. Brody. The new Society of Scholars members will be recognized at Commencement on Thursday, May 25.
