PODCAST: The Dangerous Side of Nursing

It may be a rare occurrence, but workplace violence within the hospital disproportionally affects nurses, and Dean Patricia Davidson, PhD, MEd, RN, FAAN, says this is no surprise. “Nurses are at the front line of care, and they’re often involved in stressful situations.”

Even when providing care in the home or community, she stresses the importance of being prepared to respond to violent situations. Davidson learned early in her career, through an encounter with an angered patient, how critical it is to understand your setting and initiate conversations that might eliminate or diffuse high-risk situations. She says policies need to be followed and workarounds should be avoided no matter how harmless they seem.
