With a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing (JHUSON) will fund six new scholarships of $10,000 each for students from disadvantaged backgrounds or underrepresented groups in nursing who enter the accelerated 13.5-month baccalaureate program in June of 2010.

Eligible students must demonstrate financial need and represent a group currently underrepresented in nursing.  Racial and ethnic minorities, as well as men, are welcome to apply for the scholarship funding, which may be used for tuition or living expenses.  Interested students should contact Sandra Angell, Associate Dean for Student Affairs, at [email protected].

“Though we are all facing challenges in today’s economy, Hopkins nursing is now able to offer more scholarships than ever before.  With new funding from RWJF, we can offer more financial assistance to a diverse range of applicants,” says Angell.  “With six additional students in the accelerated class, we’ll also be doing our part to help alleviate the national nursing shortage.”

Scholarships will be distributed to entry-level nursing students in accelerated programs nationwide through the RWJF New Careers in Nursing Scholarship Program, launched by RWJF and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN).  Grant funding also will be used to help leverage support for new faculty resources and provide mentoring and leadership development resources to ensure successful program completion by scholarship recipients.

“New Careers in Nursing aims to safeguard the health of the nation by helping to ease the nurse and nurse faculty shortage. Nurses are critical to delivering health care that is effective, patient-centered, timely efficient and equitable,” said RWJF Senior Adviser for Nursing Susan B. Hassmiller, PhD, RN, FAAN.  “This important initiative will also advance the Foundations strategic goal of promoting a health professional workforce that reflects the diversity of the American public.”
