National Emergency – Update

or

News Release index

Posted: 9/12/2001

To all employees:

While we will of course remain alert to the need to provide care to casualties during this time of national emergency, normal operations and services to all patients will be resumed Wednesday morning throughout Johns Hopkins Medicine.

Faculty and staff who get calls or questions about blood donations should refer inquiries to local offices of the American Red Cross. (See list below.) The ARC cannot staff a drive at Hopkins until its regularly scheduled drive September 18-19. Also below is information about road closures today (Tuesday), and support services for dealing with stress.

In addition, while tonight’s JHH Employee Recognition Dinner and Wednesday’s United Way Leadership Breakfast are postponed, the Employee Recognition ceremony at noon Wednesday will be held.

Some of you have asked about opportunities to make contributions to relief agencies. We will await word from these agencies with respect to the need and will of course do whatever we can, but in the meantime, we encourage those who wish to contribute to contact those agencies directly.

Finally, we want to thank all of our employees for their help and concern. Some casualties from the terrorist attacks are expected at Bayview and possibly at Hopkins over the next few days. We know we can count on all of you to meet the challenges that may arise.

PLEASE WATCH EMAIL FOR FREQUENT UPDATES.

Blood Donations

Many of our staff and students have inquired about donating blood today. JHM has offered to assist the Red Cross by sponsoring an emergency blood drive. At this time the Red Cross is coordinating its resources and determining a plan of action for emergency blood drives. Due to the overwhelming response of blood donors, the Red Cross reports there may be long waits to donate blood. The demand for blood will continue for the next several days. Dealing with Stress

The terrorist attack upon our nation today has greatly affected many of us in many ways. A critical or traumatic incident, such as this one, can cause significant emotional stress which may temporarily overwhelm the usual coping skills of individuals impacted by the incident. It is important to remember that it is very common or natural for people to experience stress reactions after exposure to a critical incident. It is also extremely important to deal with these emotional reactions to return to normal functioning as soon as possible. Some support services to assist JHHS employees if needed:

Critical Incident Stress Service (CISS): a comprehensive crisis response team comprised of mental health professionals, clergy, nurses, and clinical social workers. CISS provides services to groups of employees within any Johns Hopkins entity and can be reached via the 24 hour voice mail messaging system at 410-614-5764 or beeper Monday – Friday during business hours at 410-283-3654.

JHH Pastoral Care: – Business hours phone number is 5-5842 or call the paging operator at 5-4331 after hours.

JHM Faculty and Staff Assistance Program: 5-1220 JHBMC EAP at 0-0433

Employee Support Services:

–Drop-in education / staff support session to be held tomorrow (9/12) from 12p-2p as follows— – JHH will be located in JHOC 214—— JHBMC will be located in the Bayview Nursing Conference Room
