A new graduate option now offered by the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing (JHUSON) prepares students as nurse-midwives, the highly regarded health care professionals who deliver babies and provide prenatal and postpartum care, counseling in family planning and birth control, and other gynecological services to women.
The program combines JHUSON’s enhanced clinical nurse specialist option with the Shenandoah University Division of Nursing (SUDON) Master of Science in Nurse Midwifery program. Upon successful completion of the 51 credit option, students receive a Master of Science in Nursing from JHUSON and a Certificate in Midwifery from SUDON.
The curriculum will provide graduates with the tools to embark on a career path to assume leadership roles during labor and delivery and provide prenatal and postpartum care in hospitals, clinics, birthing centers, health departments, private practices, and other settings throughout the health care system.
Four Hopkins faculty members will advise and mentor students in the program: women’s health experts Phyllis Sharps, PhD, RN, CNE, FAAN, and Betty Jordan, DNSc, RNC; and certified nurse midwives Nancy Woods PhD, CNM, and Ellen Ray, MS, CNM. The faculty plans to recruit five students to begin the program in Fall 2007.
”At Hopkins, there is now a unique opportunity for advanced study in women’s health,” notes associate professor Phyllis Sharps. “Students can now have the advantage of a Hopkins nursing education as well as advanced practice nursing education in nursing midwifery.”
