Top-notch U.S. nurses are sharing their knowledge, insights, and wisdom with the nurses of tomorrow in a series of presentations at the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing (JHUSON). The presentations are part of an enrichment program for six accelerated baccalaureate students in the New Careers in Nursing leadership program.
“I hope this series will inspire our students to pursue amazing careers,” says Linda Rose, PhD, RN, an associate professor in the Department of Acute and Chronic Care who has been coordinating the speaker series.
The first to present to the students was Dr. Patricia Grady, Director of the National Institute of Nursing Research. In her November presentation, Grady laid out a number of forces that will challenge nurses in the future, including the enormous transformation in healthcare that has just been enacted in the U.S. “Think about where you can put your intellect, your experience, and your leadership to work,” she said. “Start early; it increases your options.”
Other speakers in the series will include Dr. Karen Haller, Vice President for Nursing and Patient Care at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, in February; Dr. Leslie Mancuso, President and CEO of Jhpiego, an international non-profit health organization affiliated with the Johns Hopkins University, in March; and Dr. Ellen Marie Whelan, a Senior Health Policy Analyst and Associate Director of Health Policy at the Center for American Progress, in April.
The New Careers in Nursing Program is funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and administered by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN). The program benefits students from groups underrepresented in nursing who demonstrate significant financial need.
