Jason Farley, a leading researcher in HIV/AIDS at the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, will begin his new role as president of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care (ANAC) at the organization’s annual conference this month.
Through his term as president-elect, Farley, PhD, MPH, ANP-BC, FAAN, AACRN, has been preparing to lead the organization in its mission to enhance nurse development in HIV care, improve the health of those living with HIV, and lead both nurse and public awareness. According to Farley, mentorship brought him to ANAC, and the same ideals of bringing in the next generation of HIV nurse leaders will guide him as president.
“Because of my mentors, I was introduced to ANAC and the network of like-minded clinicians, researchers, and advocates. One of my central roles as president is to help lead other nurses to the same ambition of learning, researching, and advocating for better treatment outcomes and prevention of HIV infection. It’s an exciting recognition and privilege.”
Last year, Farley led an initiative at the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing through a $1.5 million grant to launch a new HIV curriculum that gave students more time in clinical placement and sensitivity training to challenge preconceptions they might have about patients living with or at risk for HIV. In the local community, Farley works with the Baltimore City Health Department to scale up HIV prevention services, and nationally, his annual “Diagnosis, Care, and Management of Persons with HIV/AIDS” course provides a full week of presentations, discussions, and training that utilize evidence-based strategies to enhance patient-centered outcomes. As a global epidemiologist, his work in South Africa addressing the high prevalence of HIV and multi-drug resistant tuberculosis co-infection is also changing the nursing role in its management.
In addition to Farley’s installment as president and his involvement in a panel on Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis or “PrEP,” Assistant Professor Jennifer Stewart, PhD, RN, will lead a research workshop during the conference, and Professor Jacquelyn Campbell, PhD, RN, FAAN, will deliver a scientific plenary. Campbell will also present the results of a domestic violence/HIV study led by PhD student Jocelyn Anderson and co-conducted with Associate Dean for Research Nancy Glass, PhD, MPH, RN, FAAN.
