2009 marks a double anniversary for Johns Hopkins Nursing:  25 years for the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing (JHUSON), and 120 years of nursing education at Johns Hopkins.

The Johns Hopkins Hospital and its nursing training program both opened in 1889. In the ensuing decades, founders M. Adelaide Nutting, Isabel Hampton Robb, and Lavinia Dock established what would become the national model for nursing education.  After educating generations of exceptional nurses, in 1984 the School of Nursing was established as the eighth division of the Johns Hopkins University. Today the School of Nursing continues to redefine nursing education through a unique combination of academic rigor, extraordinary nursing scholarship, and unparalleled opportunities for nursing graduates.

“This anniversary year offers us an opportunity to stop, reflect, and think about our future,” notes JHUSON Dean Martha N. Hill, a member of the class of ’64 and one of the first faculty members at the University School of Nursing.  “It’s quite amazing to be a part of all that’s occurred during the past 25 years.  Its a dream come true for me, my colleagues, and all our alumni.”

In celebration of the anniversaries, JHUSON has launched a story and images project, “They Must Be Hopkins Nurses,” that is collecting and sharing the experiences, and visual histories (photos, drawings, letter, diary entries, etc.) of Hopkins Nurses over the decades.  Hopkins Nurses throughout the world alumni, current students, and nurses from Johns Hopkins Hospital and anyone with a fond memory or unique experience with a Hopkins Nurse, are encouraged to share their recollections, remembrances, and photos at www.nursing.jhu.edu/hopkinsnurses/ , by e-mail to [email protected], or in written form mailed to Kelly Brooks-Staub, JHUSON, 525 North Wolfe Street, Baltimore, MD 21205.

During the anniversary year, JHUSON is sharing the collected anecdotes and images through a commemorative website http://www.son.jhmi.edu/anniversary/, a special anniversary edition of Johns Hopkins Nursing, homecoming events, and a welcoming of the 25th entering class, the Class of 2011.
