Marie Nolan, PhD, MPH, RN, FAAN, a noted researcher and former director of the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing (JHUSON) PhD program is the new chairperson of the Department of Acute and Chronic Care. She will assume her new role effective July 1.
Nolan hopes to “promote mentor-mentee partnerships/teams and develop collaborative groups of faculty, students, and staff” in her new role. She also would like to foster a “community of scholars with a sense of solidarity in achieving individual, departmental, and SON goals.” Nolan is internationally known for her work on patient and family decision making in the face of critical illness. Her research focuses on the decision-making process at the end of life and on decisions regarding living organ donation, key issues in both clinical care and bioethics. In addition to serving as the SON’s PhD director, Nolan also is the Johns Hopkins Director of the China Doctoral Program Partnership, a collaboration between Peking Union Medical College (PUMC) School of Nursing in Beijing and JHUSON. This program was the first PhD Program for Nurses to graduate students in China and is funded by the China Medical Board of New York.
“It is our mission to provide leadership in nursing research, practice, service, and education that focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and long term management of underserved and vulnerable populations,” Nolan says. “I look forward to working with School of Nursing faculty, staff, and students to see this mission is carried out.”
