The Black Student Nursing Association (BSNA) of the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing (JHUSON) will hold its inaugural conference, “Nursing: Beyond Color, Beyond Culture,” on April 22-23, 2005.

According to senior LaTonya Jackson, president of the BSNA, the conference exemplifies the organization’s mission. “We aim to provide service and collegiality as we seek to become future nurses dedicated to eliminating health disparities and advancing the profession,” she explains.

“The conference will serve to bring nursing students and nursing professionals together to address the issues of diversification, pursuit of higher degrees, and research in nursing,” she adds. “Through informative and motivational sessions, the ultimate goals are to encourage professional growth and to provide a layout for bridging the gap of health disparities.”

Keynote speaker is Dr. Alicia Georges from the Lehman College Department of Nursing. Dr. Georges is an educator, practitioner, and community activist. She was the fifth president of the National Black Nurses Association (1987-1991) and is currently the president of the National Black Nurses Foundation and the secretary-treasurer of the board of the International Society on Hypertension in Blacks.

The two-day conference also includes a Meet and Greet, a panel discussion on health disparities, a variety of topical sessions, poster presentations, and a multitude of vendors. Participants will be able to attend sessions on a variety of topics including research opportunities, diversity within nursing, and increasing participation in student nursing organizations.

All nurses and nursing students are invited to participate. Registration is $15 for students and $25 for professionals who register by April 19, 2005. To register, complete the registration form or contact Cassandra Jones at [email protected] or 410-955-7548.
