Baltimore (MD) community patrons Clair Zamoiski Segal and Thomas (Tommy) H. Segal have established a $1 million Johns Hopkins University (JHU) School of Nursing endowment in honor of Mrs. Segal’s mother, Ellen Levi Zamoiski. Beginning this year, the Segals also will fund a $30,000 annual Ellen Levi Zamoiski Doctoral Fellowship, the first of its kind in doctoral education at the School of Nursing (SON).

“This remarkable gift recognizes the near-crisis state in the shortage of rising nurse educators who teach our future nurses,” noted SON Dean Martha Hill. “As we move ever faster toward the head-on collision of a nationwide nursing shortage and a growing aging population, those of us in nursing education ask more than ‘Who will care for us?’ We also ask ‘Who will educate those who will care for us?’ The Segals’ generosity will help Hopkins, the School of Nursing and the nation answer that question.”

Jessica Roberts

The first recipient of the Ellen Levi Zamoiski Doctoral Fellowship is Jessica Roberts, who currently is pursuing a combined Master’s in Nursing and Public Health and a Ph.D. in Nursing. Roberts is from Wintergarden, FL and is a 2003 graduate of the University of Florida with a B.S. in Nursing and a B.A. in Sociology. She also is the recipient of a National Institute of Mental Health pre-doctoral fellowship in violence research and is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. In co-curricular activities, Roberts is the immediate past president of the JHUSON Graduate Student Organization.

According to the Segals, Roberts is the embodiment of why they are establishing the endowment. Clair Zamoiski Segal noted that she and Tommy are “honored to be instrumental in bringing to doctoral nursing education a future leader like Jessica. The high caliber of expertise she and future Zamoiski Fellows will bring to the field will honor my mother in her lifetime and ultimately will create an impressive cadre of the best of Hopkins Nursing.”
