Sharon L. Kozachik, RN, PhD, Assistant Professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing (JHUSON), has received a 2009 ONS Foundation Research Grant. The ONS Foundation awards this grant to principal investigators actively involved in some aspect of care, education, or research for patients with cancer. The title of her proposal is Sleep, HPA Axis Activity, and Paclitaxel-Induced Neuropathic Pain. The grant is supported by the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) and Sigma Theta Tau International Foundation for Nursing.
“Pain and sleep disturbance are significant problems for cancer patients and their family caregivers, but little is known about the mechanisms that link together these two distressing symptoms,” said Kozachik. “The findings from the research have the potential to guide the development of interventions to improve symptom management and quality of life for the countless thousands of cancer patients who suffer from co-occurring pain and sleep disturbance. I am grateful to ONS and Sigma Theta Tau International Foundation for Nursing for their generous funding to support my efforts in chemotherapy-related symptoms research.”
Kozachik received her bachelor of science in nursing degree from the University of Michigan in Flint, MI, her master of science in nursing degree from Michigan State University, and her PhD from Johns Hopkins University. She is an active member of ONS.
