The Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing (JHUSON) is honoring the 50th anniversary of the Peace Corps and the 20th anniversary of the School’s Peace Corps Fellows Program throughout the week of February 28-March 4.

President John F. Kennedy established the Peace Corps in 1961 to promote world peace and friendship. In 1991, JHUSON started its Peace Corps Fellows Program for Returned Peace Corps Volunteers. At the time, the program was the first of its kind at a school of nursing. Since its inception, the School has graduated more than 300 Returned Peace Corps Volunteers.
The Hopkins Nursing Peace Corps week will feature several events showcasing the returned volunteers experiences, including a poster display highlighting their countries of service. Students will also be sharing their stories about how the Peace Corps influenced their career choice in podcasts on the School’s website.
The week culminates with a keynote speech by Sheila Davis, DNP, ANP-BC, FAAN, the Director of Global Nursing at Partners in Health, on March 2. Davis joined Partners in Health last October after serving on the faculty of the Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions for two years. Her specialties include domestic and international HIV/AIDS and infectious diseases. This event will also feature a tribute to the late Sargent Shriver, the first director of the Peace Corps and a driving force behind its creation.

Monday, February 28
Countries of Service Poster Display, 8 am-4 pm, Carpenter Room. Returned Peace Corps Volunteers display posters, artifacts, photos ,and videos from their countries of service.
Women’s Stories from Around the World Photo Competition, 8 am-4 pm, SON Cafe. A gallery featuring the winners of the women’s health photo competition.
“Tell Your Story” Open Mic Event, 12 pm, Carpenter Room. Students are invited to share life experiences in a story-telling, open mic format. A celebratory cake will be served to kick off the week’s events.
Tuesday, March 1 (Official Anniversary of Peace Corps)

Presentations by Returned Peace Corps Volunteers, 12 pm, Rooms 9 & 10. Several Returned Peace Corps Volunteers will give brief presentations about their service and answer questions from fellow students.
Bringing the World Home Peace Corps Anniversary Celebration in partnership with the University of Maryland, 7 pm, Creative Alliance, 3134 Eastern Ave. Since the launch of the Peace Corps 50 years ago, 200,000 volunteers have lived and served in 140 countries and returned home transformed by their cross-cultural experiences. Returned volunteers will share stories from Albania to Zimbabwe. Friends of Sargent Shriver will recount memories from the founding days of the Peace Corps. The event will include refreshments, music, photo and artifact displays, and an open-mic story-telling booth. Tickets are $13 and will be sold at the JHUSON on February 28-March 1.

Keynote Speech by Sheila Davis, DNP, ANP-BC, FAAN,4-6 pm, Alumni Auditorium. Sheila Davis, Director of Global Nursing at Partners in Health, will speak about her work in global nursing, the current work of Partners in Health, and strategies for nurses interested in a career in global nursing and global health. This event will also honor the late Sargent Shriver, a driving force behind the creation of the Peace Corps and the programs first director.
