About the Research Study

A Research Study for Immigrant Women’s Health, Safety and Empowerment
The BSHAPE project aims to learn about and address women’s safety and health needs via their participation in a digital intervention research study. Activities are remote and no in-person meeting is required.
YOU MAY BE ELIGIBLE IF:
- You are between 18-64 years of age
- You are a foreign-born immigrant women of any race/nationality
- You have had repeated exposures to stressful life experiences
- Have access to a safe computer or smartphone with internet
IF ELIGIBLE, YOU WILL BE ASKED TO:
- Provide information about you and your experiences
- Answer a number of surveys
- Provide a safe email and a mobile number
- Complete the online educational modules, safety tools and stress reduction activities, if needed
- Repeat the surveys at 3, 6 and 12 months.
You can receive up to $40 for each completed survey
You can receive $160 for completing the whole year and each survey timepoint. Some timepoints will have some extra activities to complete beyond the survey. On average, a time point may take 1-2 hours to complete

Frequently Asked Questions
Eligibility for the study is determined through a screening process, and eligible women receive a link to continue via email or phone. Women will be asked to access the study website four times over the course of the study. Women will complete questions about health, safety, relationships, and other experiences. Their responses help to generate a set of information and resources they can access, which are geared towards immigrant women’s needs. Study participants receive up to $160 for their participation over the course of the 12-month study for completing the surveys.

In order to conduct any research study with people, researchers have to demonstrate that proper safeguards are in place in order to start a research study. The BSHAPE research study is required to submit a list of safeguards and best practices to the Johns Hopkins University Internal Review Board (IRB00504423) which is the oversight body for all research activities at JHU. These safeguards include:
- Ensuring that participant data is securely stored using approved methods
- Required specific training for all staff involved with the research study
- Not sharing any identifying information with anyone not authorized on the study team
- Ensuring study staff do not store identifying information beyond the approved storage database
- Requiring that the systems undergo regularly security reviews.
The JHU eIRB number for this study is IRB00504423
The BSHAPE study has been awarded a Certificate of Confidentiality from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) which is the sponsor of the study. This certificate adds a layer of protection for participants enrolled in sensitive research. This certificate prohibits the disclosure of identifiable information to anyone not connected to the research. This means that no entity beyond the BSHAPE study can get access to participant information, such as police, justice system, immigration enforcement, etc. To learn more about Certificate of Confidentiality, please visit the NIH here.
About Us – Meet the Investigators
The Principal Investigator (PI) of the BSHAPE study is Dr. Bushra Sabri, Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing. Other investigators include Dr. Erica Sibinga at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and Dr.Chakra Budhathoki at Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing.
