Bunmi Ogungbe is a cardiovascular epidemiologist dedicated to using her clinical, research, and public health expertise to improve cardiometabolic outcomes among populations experiencing social marginalization. She collaborates on several community-engaged multi-level interventions leveraging digital technologies to improve hypertension control and management of chronic conditions. She is an emerging leader in community-engaged research seeking to advance cardiovascular health equity, both locally in the US and globally.
Her work within the US involves implementing tailored cardiometabolic interventions and characterizing cardiac post-acute sequela of COVID-19. Her global cardiovascular health work focuses on advancing team-based hypertension care, novel hypertension medication adherence approaches, and World Bank – Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) sponsored projects addressing COVID-19-related disruptions to primary care services in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Through her research and collaborations, Dr. Ogungbe aims to 1) lead innovative digital and community-engaged interventions to improve hypertension control and advance cardiovascular health equity, 2) implement novel approaches to address underrepresentation in cardiovascular clinical trials, 3) leverage rich phenotypic epidemiologic datasets to assess multilevel determinants of cardiovascular health inequities, which will inform practical, scalable and sustainable interventions.
She has received multiple awards, including the PEO International Peace Scholarship award, Johns Hopkins Alliance for Health Equity Global Health Equity Scholarship, American Heart Association (AHA) Early Career Award, AHA Hypertension Sessions Award, Early Career Assistant Reviewer/Editor for the Hypertension journal, Outstanding Dissertation Award. She serves on AHA writing committees and contributes to scientific statements. Dr. Ogungbe previously obtained her Bachelor of Nursing Science degree from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Nigeria, her Master of Public Health degree in Epidemiology from Jackson State University, Mississippi, and her PhD from Johns Hopkins University.
