They often put care for themselves last on the list, but nurses still have a responsibility to promote their own health. The recently revised Code of Ethics for Nurses even calls for clinicians to find a balance between their work in ensuring patient safety and their own health management. As Dean Patricia Davidson, PhD, MEd, RN, FAAN, has said, “we have to give nurses permission to look after their own health.” A demanding profession, yes, but it should still be one that protects the safety of both patients and caregivers.
