Johns Hopkins School of Nursing Alumni Earns Woodrow Wilson Award for Distinguished Government Service

or

Johns Hopkins School of Nursing (JHSON) alumna and Congresswoman Lauren Underwood has earned the Woodrow Wilson Award for Distinguished Government Service from the Johns Hopkins University. The award honors alumni who have brought recognition to the university by their current or recently concluded distinguished public service as elected or appointed officials.

Congresswoman Underwood received a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)/Master of Public Health (MPH) joint degree from JHSON and the Bloomberg School of Public Health. She currently serves as the Illinois 14th Congressional District representative and is the youngest African American women to serve in the United States House of Representatives.

“Congresswoman Underwood is a key leader in health care change for her constituents in Illinois and for the nation,” said JHSON Dean Patricia Davidson. “Her passion as a nurse provides an intimate view of the patient experience and the challenges facing health care in the U.S. today.”

Underwood previously served as a public health nurse and a senior advisor at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services helping to implement the Affordable Care Act. During her time in the Obama administration, she also helped communities across the country prevent, prepare for, and respond to disasters, bioterror threats, and public health emergencies.

“We are so proud of Congresswoman Underwood’s accomplishments and we look forward to witnessing her future successes,” said Dean Davidson.

Underwood received her award at a JHSON Alumni Weekend event on October 4.
