In its role as Secretariat of the Global Network of the World Health Organization Collaborating Centers for Nursing and Midwifery (GMWHOCCNM), the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing (JHSON) has invited the African Forum for Research and Education in Health (AFREhealth) to become a partner of the GMWHOCCNM. AFREhealth and GMWHOCCNM will work together to strengthen global nursing and midwifery while also furthering health care in Africa through research, education, and capacity building.
“Partners of the GMWHOCCNM are integral to contributing to WHO’s greater health agenda and supporting international health and global connectedness necessary for improving health equity and outcomes,” says Nancy Reynolds, PhD, RN, C-NP, FAAN, associate dean of global affairs at JHSON and co-secretary general of the GMWHOCCNM.
“AFREhealth, as a partner, will contribute to the WHO’s global agenda by building a responsive health workforce, providing relevant, high quality evidence-based health care in Africa through interprofessional education and research,” adds Abigail Kazembe, PhD, RNM, vice president for AFhealth.
Comprised of 44 WHO Collaborating Centres for Nursing and Midwifery across the six regions of the world, GMWHOCCNM works to promote health for all populations through collaboration, communication, and the cohesion of nursing and midwifery throughout the global community. AFREhealth is an interdisciplinary health professional organization that works with Ministries of Health, training institutions, and other stakeholders to improve the quality of health care in Africa through research, education, and capacity building.
JHSON is currently serving its four-year term as GMWHOCCNM’s Secretariat and has made strides to build and maintain the organization’s online presence through social media and web. It has focused on recognizing the resources and skills of each of the centers and translating those into measureable improvements for nurses and communities.
The school is also planning the GMWHOCCNM’s next Biennial Conference, which will be held in Chiang Mai in 2020.
