Each year, the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing offers an opportunity for scholarship recipients and those who fund the scholarship to meet. This year, according to Fiona Newton, Associate Dean for Development and Alumni Relations, each found an opportunity to learn more about the other, and to develop a special bond.
For this year’s event, the 17th annual Scholar Donor Luncheon on April 6, Jeanine Cavagnaro traveled from Portland, Oregon to meet the scholar who is the 2010 recipient of the Louise Cavagnaro Endowed Scholarship, Christine Young. She represented her aunt–Louise “Cavi” Cavagnaro, a former Johns Hopkins Hospital administrator and longtime friend and supporter of the School who died last year. The scholarship fund was established by friends and colleagues to honor her retirement from Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1985. The Cavagnaro family continues to contribute to the fund in her memory. J. Cavagnaro noted, “We’re carrying on [Cavi’s] legacy. It’s an honor to be able to support Hopkins and the nursing students here. As a nurse, I understand how important scholarships are to nursing students.”
Former JHSON scholarship recipient Sandra Winfield, ’70, and her husband Jerry, came from Texas to attend this years luncheon and meet four of the Winfield Scholars: Ghislaine Cedeno ’11, Tal Raizer ’11, Rachelle Sumrall ’12, and Magdalene Tanyi Epse Ayuk ’12. At the lunch, Winfield told stories about nursing school in the late 1960s, and reminded the scholarship recipients how fortunate they are in 2011 to learn skills using simulations. “Practice makes perfect in every endeavor,” she said, “and the new technologies represent a great advance in the education of future nurses.”
