After four decades of service to Johns Hopkins University, The Johns Hopkins Hospital Department of Nursing, and the Johns Hopkins Nurses’ Alumni Association, Sandra (Sandy) Angell, School of Nursing associate dean for student affairs, will retire in June 2012.
“A School of Nursing without Sandy at the helm of Student Affairs is hard to imagine,” says School of Nursing dean Martha Hill, PhD, RN. “She is one of our originals, having been part of our admissions team since shortly after the School opened in 1984, and she has been key to the growth and success that brought the School to our #1 status.”
In service to the University, Angell was a member of the Commission on Undergraduate Education, and chair for the Subcommittee on Academic Advising and Career Services. She also participated in the Middle States Commission on Higher Education Accreditation Review; worked as a member of the Steering Committee for Johns Hopkins University Site Visit; and was on the executive committee for the SIS (Student Information Systems) Implementation Project.
In 2009, Angell—who received her Diploma in Nursing from The Johns Hopkins Hospital and her Bachelor of Science and Master of Liberal Arts from Johns Hopkins University—was awarded the Johns Hopkins Alumni Heritage Award. The recognition is given to Hopkins alumni and friends who have contributed outstanding service over an extended period of time to the University and to its alumni activities. Angel remains quite active in the Johns Hopkins Nurses Alumni Association, Inc. where she has served on the Board of Directors and the Nominating Committee and as a member of the Student Education Committee. She also held the offices of vice president and president and has continually served on her Class Reunion Committee.
“I am proud to have been part of the team that built—from the ground up—the School’s comprehensive programs, but it’s now time for the next logical step in my professional and personal life,” explains Angell.
“We applaud Sandy’s many accomplishments at the School and the University and are grateful for a long-running and successful tenure that has been characterized by professionalism, integrity of the highest standard, loyalty, and dedication to service,” says Hill.
Angell says she plans to spend more time with her mother, husband, children, and grandchildren (“two and counting!”).
