Elizabeth (Ibby) Tanner, PhD, MS, RN, FNGNA, associate professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing (JHUSON), has been inducted as a National Gerontological Nursing Association (NGNA) Fellow.
“The future of health and healthcare in this country depends, in a large part, on the approaches that nurses use in addressing the needs of an aging society,” says Tanner. “I have dedicated my career to gerontological nursing–educating nurses, promoting excellence in practice and policy development, and conducting research–to improve the quality of life for older adults.”
At the School of Nursing, Tanner has led development of the School’s gerontology curriculum and created a Geriatric Interest Group for Nursing, Public Health, and Medicine students. She also holds a joint appointment in the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Division of Geriatrics and Gerontology and is core faculty in the Center on Aging and Health.
Tanner is a Hartford Institute Geriatric Nursing Research Scholar, serves on committees of the National Gerontological Nursing Association, the Gerontological Society of America, and Sigma Theta Tau, and is a member of the Baltimore City Commission on Aging and Retirement Education. She is a co-investigator on several interdisciplinary research teams focusing on older adults’ hospital transitions, promoting independent living in community settings, and health promotion.
