Each day, thousands of Baltimore City residents flock to the Northeast Market located in East Baltimore but on May 7, they were able to get more than their groceries or a meal. The Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing (JHUSON) co-sponsored a Health and Wellness Fair with Hopkins SOURCE (Student Outreach and Resource Center) organization in partnership with the Baltimore City Health Department.

The event kicked-off with opening remarks by JHUSON assistant professor Deborah E. Jones, PhD, RN, and, representing Mayor Stephanie Rawlings Blake, Yolanda Jiggetts, Deputy Director of Operations, Public Safety and Operations for the City of Baltimore.

“It is great to see two well-known Baltimore organizations, Johns Hopkins and the Northeast Market, work together to improve the health of Baltimore,” Jiggetts said. “Knowledge is power, and the more you know, the better you can take care of yourself.”

Participants were able to check their blood pressure and glucose levels; get tested for HIV; receive H1N1 and seasonal flu vaccines; and learn more about diabetes, nutrition, injury prevention, and child safety.

More than 10 Baltimore- and Hopkins-affiliated organizations were represented at the fair including the Isaiah Wellness Center, Baltimore Health Care Access, Maryland Insurance Administration, DOVE (Domestic Violence Enhanced Visitation Program), Hopkins Birth Companions, Baltimore Behavioral Health, Bienestar Baltimore, the Wald Community Nursing Center and others.
