NEWGIZA University (NGU), a component of the newly planned NEWGIZA community now developing on the outskirts of Cairo, Egypt, is exploring with the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing (JHUSON) methods to bring the Hopkins model of nursing education and advanced nurse training to Egypt.
Through a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding, JHUSON will consult with NGU on the establishment of the NEWGIZA University School of Nursing (NGUSON). The memorandum is the first step toward initial and sustained consultation and collaboration to create a center of excellence in nursing for the region.
Hopkins nursing leadership will assist in the recruitment of NGUSON’s founding dean and faculty and advise on other aspects of the school’s development, including academics, administrative policies and procedures, and finances. Future consultations could include collaborative academic and research activities such as joint seminars, workshops, publications, and instruction.
Dean Martha N. Hill, PhD, RN, notes that the opportunity coincides with the recent launch of the School’s Center for Global Nursing and exemplifies the goals of the new Center, particularly “the essential need to provide targeted capacity development across the globe.”
“This is an exciting opportunity that shows there are no borders to education or practice,” says Pamela Jeffries, Associate Dean of Academic Affairs. She adds, “this project is an example of our mission: to improve the health of individuals and diverse communities both locally and globally.”
Prior to developing the MOU, Jeffries and Hill visited NEWGIZA to learn more about the development that will feature a variety of lifestyle options, education opportunities, and healthcare.
