Associate Professors Nancy Glass, PhD, MPH, RN and Marie Nolan, PhD, MPH, RN of the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing (JHUSON) have been named fellows in the American Academy of Nursing (AAN) for 2009.
Glass and Nolan now join an elite cadre of nurses who are leaders in education, management, practice, and research. Academy Fellows (FAAN) hold a variety of positions such as association executives; university presidents, chancellors and deans; state and federal political appointees; hospital chief executives and vice presidents for nursing; nurse consultants; and researchers and entrepreneurs. Glass and Nolan will be inducted along with 98 nurse leaders at the Academy’s 36th Annual Meeting Conference, on November 7, 2009, in Atlanta, GA.
Glass an associate director of the JHU Center for Global Health and Ambassador for Research!America’s Paul G. Rogers Society for Global Health Research, has centered her research on clinical care and intervention in the areas of violence prevention and health disparities. Nolan is director of the PhD program at JHUSON and is conducting pioneering end-of-life research revealing that instead of the autonomous decision making model prevalent in clinical practice and health care policy, most critically ill patients prefer shared decision making with their family and physician.
As Fellows, Glass and Nolan will engage other health care leaders on enhancing the quality of health and nursing care; promoting healthy aging and human development across the life continuum; reducing health disparities and inequalities; shaping healthy behaviors and environments; integrating mental and physical health care; and strengthening the nursing and health care delivery system, nationally and internationally.
The AAN was founded in 1973 under the aegis of the ANA. Currently, with 1,500 members or Fellows the AAN has become an independent affiliate of the ANA. The Academy and its members strive to create and execute knowledge-driven and polity-related initiatives to drive reform of Americas health care system.
