School of Nursing Dean Named to Maryland’s Top 100 Women

Martha N. Hill, PhD, RN, FAAN, Dean of the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing, has been named as one of The Daily Record’s 2009 Maryland’s Top 100 Women. Established in 1996, The Daily Record annual award program recognizes outstanding professional women in Maryland who give back by mentoring others and working in their communities. This is Hill’s second such awardshe was also named a Top 100 Woman in 2006.

“I’m honored to be counted in this group of talented, community-minded women,” says Hill. “I hope to see more Hopkins Nurses on the list in future years, as we excel in mentoring students, guiding young faculty, and serving the East Baltimore community through our programs and services.”

Hill, who has been a faculty member in the School of Nursing since it opened in 1983, has a long history of accomplishment in the field of nursing, mentorship of students and junior faculty members, and service to the health care community. She is internationally known for her work and research in preventing and treating hypertension and its complications, particularly among young, urban African-American men, and is an active investigator and consultant on several NIH-funded clinical trials. In addition to her faculty position at the School of Nursing, Hill sits on the Board of Directors for the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, the Institute of Medicine’s Council Panel, and has played a pivotal role in leading the School of Nursing in the national rankings to fourth place in the 2008 graduate school rankings.

Maryland’s Top 100 Women was created to recognize the outstanding achievements of professional women who reside or work in Maryland and to provide the business community with a resource for selecting candidates to fill a management position or corporate board seat. The winners will be honored at an awards ceremony on May 11, 2009 at the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall in Baltimore.
