Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing (JHUSON) associate dean for admissions and student affairs Sandra Angell is the 2009 recipient of the Johns Hopkins University Alumni Heritage Award.
Angell has served the University, the Johns Hopkins Hospital, and the Johns Hopkins Nurses’ Alumni Association for four decades. In service to the university, she was a member of the Commission on Undergraduate Education, and Chair for the Subcommittee on Academic Advising and Career Services. She also participated in the Middle States Commission on Higher Education Accreditation Review and worked as a member of the Steering Committee for the Johns Hopkins University Site Visit. Angell also was on the Executive Committee for the SIS (Student Information Systems) Implementation Project and continues on the Post-Implementation Steering Committee.
“Sandy typifies the Hopkins’ tradition of excellence, and those who know her well believe that she has touched the lives of more nurses and students than one could possibly count,” Deborah Baker, former president of the Johns Hopkins Nurses Alumni Association, said in her nominating letter.
She continues to be quite active in the Johns Hopkins Nurses’ Alumni Association, Inc. Angell has served on the Board of Directors and the Nominating Committee as well as a member of the Student Affairs Coordinating Committee. She has held the offices of vice president and president and has continually served on her Class Reunion Committee. Angell currently represents the School of Nursing as one of the Student Disability Services Coordinators.
The Heritage Award honors alumni and friends of Johns Hopkins who have contributed outstanding service over an extended period to the progress of the University or the activities of the Alumni Association.
“It is an honor to receive this award,” Angell said. “My involvement in the Alumni Association led to my role at the School of Nursing, and my career is a classic example of the value of networking. Thanks to the mentorship of Hopkins alumni, I have been able to pursue my passion for working with students.”
