Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing (JHUSON) faculty are among those helping to raise awareness of the nationwide nursing shortage at the Johnson and Johnson Campaign for Nursing’s Future “Promise of Nursing for Maryland” gala Thursday, September 24.
Associate professors Joan Kub, PhD, APHN, BC; Linda Rose, PhD, RN; Julie Stanik-Hutt; assistant professors Laura Taylor, PhD, RN; Mary Terhaar, DNSc, RN, and executive director for the Institute for Johns Hopkins Nursing (IJHN) Jane Shivnan join area nurses and health care professionals from local hospitals and institutions at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront Hotel to celebrate the nursing profession. The funds raised at the gala will be used for undergraduate nursing student scholarships, graduate nursing education fellowships to prepare nursing faculty, and grants to nursing schools to expand their program capacity
According to the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), an arm of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Maryland is expected to suffer a nursing shortfall rate of almost 30 percent, or more than 18,200 nurses, by the year 2020.
According to Rose, a member of the galas steering committee, “The nursing shortage is a very real concern, and its important to take the steps now to reverse that shortfall,” Rose said. “This campaign has helped raise awareness, and solicited involvement from local and national circles.”
Since 2002, the Johnson and Johnson Campaign for Nursing’s Future has raised more than $16 million to help close the national nursing gap.
