Sue Hassmiller, PhD, RN, FAAN, Director of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundations (RWJF) Institute of Medicine Initiative on the Future of Nursing, is this years speaker at the Sigma Theta Tau Nu Beta Chapter Founders’ Day celebration. She will speak on “Sigma Theta Tau International: It’s Values at Work in Today’s Healthcare Arena.”
Hassmiller, who also is an RWJF Senior Advisor, shapes and leads the Foundation’s strategies to address the nursing and nurse faculty shortages in an effort to create a higher quality of patient care in the United States. Her work with the Initiative on the Future of Nursing will identify new solutions for nursing in areas of recruitment, education, retention, and new technologies; in the delivery of nursing services in a variety of care settings; and in the context of the entire healthcare workforce.
She joined RWJF in 1997 and recently served a six-year term as a member of the National Board of Governors for the American Red Cross, serving in the role of chair of the Disaster and Chapter Services Committee. Previously, Hassmiller was with the Health Resources and Services Administration, where she was the executive director of the U.S. Public Health Service Primary Care Policy Fellowship and worked on other national and international primary care initiatives.
Founders’ Day is an annual celebration of the values of Sigma Theta Tau: excellence, scholarship, leadership, and service. This year’s celebration is open to all Hopkins nurses, students, and staff and takes place Tuesday, October 27, 5 to 6 p.m. at the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing in Room 305. A reception will follow in the Carpenter Room.
