Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing Professor Miyong Kim, PhD, RN, FAAN is the new chair of the School’s Department of Health Systems and Outcomes, according to an announcement today by Dean Martha N. Hill, PhD, RN, FAAN.
Dean Hill described Kim as “an exceptional translational researcher who brings to the position a collaborative spirit and leadership style that exemplifies the scholarly excellence of the School of Nursing.” During the selection process, faculty echoed Hill’s observations. One noted that Kim has “an excellent background in research and leadership skills that support the SON culture of excellence in teaching, research, scholarship, and practice.” Another added “she has a compelling connection with the work of our department, and she inspired me.”
As a Johns Hopkins professor and researcher, Kim’s work has focused on the key areas of hypertension and diabetes control, cancer prevention, and mental health. She employs her expertise in community-based participatory research, health literacy, and program evaluation. Through grant funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality (AHRQ), the American Legacy Foundation, and the American Alzheimers Association, she is testing the effectiveness of a community-based self-help program in underserved minority populations. Her research is widely published both here in the U.S. and in Korea and she has presented more than 100 methodological papers at international and national scientific conferences. Kim has participated in the Robert Wood Johnson Executive Nurse Fellows Program, an advanced leadership program for nurses in senior executive roles, and serves as a regular NIH study section member and evaluation consultant on an array of national and international research and policy analysis projects.
Kim assumes her role on August 18, 2008. She replaces the late Dr. Vicki Mock, the first chair of the JHUSON Department of Health Systems and Outcomes, and the department’s interim chair, Maryann Fralic, DrPH, RN, FAAN. Kim noted, “These two wonderful Chairs leave very big shoes to fill. Their leadership legacy is just extraordinary. I will work to build on their efforts and continue to strengthen the existing infrastructures to support the phenomenal faculty. My goal is to create an inclusive forum for exciting and innovative scholarship that addresses the important health system challenges our nation is facing.”
