Meeting the health needs of sexual assault victims poses unique challenges to nurses. In the United States, there were 209,880 victims of rape, attempted rape or sexual assault in 2004. And somewhere in America, someone is sexually assaulted every two and a half minutes.
Sexual Assault Forensic Nurse Examiner Training, a five-day seminar, provides the special knowledge and skills to respond effectively to such emergencies. Scheduled to be held in Baltimore, MD on March 13-17, 2006, the program is sponsored by the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing, The Institute for Johns Hopkins Nursing, and the Maryland Coalition Against Sexual Assault.
Through lectures, case studies, discussions, and group activities, nurses who attend Sexual Assault Forensic Nurse Examiner Training will receive the classroom training required to become a Forensic Nurse Examiner. Course topics include:
– Forensic Nursing/SART process
– Rape Trauma Syndrome
– Police roles and procedures
– Evidence recognition, collection, and preservation
– Evaluating the physically abused patient
– Interviewing and history taking
– Anogenital anatomy
– Identification and interpretation of anogenital findings • Documentation
– Forensic photography
– Alternative forensic techniques
– DNA
– Substance related rape
– Expert witness testimony
– Profiling the rapist
– Patterned injuries
The Forensic Nurse Examiner Certification for the Adult/Adolescent patient requires an additional 40 hour clinical component beyond this 40 hour classroom training. These clinical requirements include sexual assault examinations, forensic laboratory familiarity, pelvic examinations, court observation, law enforcement observation, and rape crisis center experience. Nurses who aspire to become a Pediatric Forensic Nurse Examiner are required to take a separate and additional 62 hours of classroom and clinical training after obtaining their Adult/Adolescent Forensic Nurse Examiner certification.
