The Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing will mark the graduation of its largest accelerated class to date – 146 students – during commencement ceremonies on July 21, 2006. This achievement follows on the heels of the acceptance of the largest accelerated class to date – 165 students – who began classes at the school in June.
The keynote address at the July commencement ceremony will be given by Kathleen Potempa DNSc, RN, FAAN, who has recently accepted the position of Dean of the University of Michigan School of Nursing, though she will continue to serve as Vice President and Dean of the School of Nursing at Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) through the summer. Potempa’s daughter, Stacia Potempa, is a member of the graduating class.
Potempa is a nurse leader and researcher in the areas of fatigue, exercise and cardiovascular fitness. She has served on NIH review panels, tasks forces and committees for the American Association Colleges of Nursing (AACN), the American Academy of Nursing Finance Committee, the Board of Directors of the Oregon Heart Association, and the Oregon Congressional Task Force on Health Personnel.
As a member of the Oregon Nursing Leadership Council, Dr. Potempa has participated in the redesign of nursing education and the practice environment in Oregon. And in 2001, the US Secretary of Health and Human Services appointed Dr. Potempa to the National Advisory Council on Nurse Education and Practice for a five-year term.
