Fannie Gaston-Johansson, DrMedSc, RN, FAAN, professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing, has joined the Royal Society of Arts and Sciences of Goteborg, Sweden.

Dr. Gaston-Johansson holds the Elsie M. Lawler Endowed Chair in Research at the School of Nursing and directs the school’s international and extramural affairs and the Center for Health Disparities Research. She holds a joint appointment in the Department of Oncology at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. She is also a professor and the dean of the School of Health Sciences at Goteborgs Universitet in Goteborg, Sweden.
Dr. Gaston-Johannson’s nursing research focuses on symptom management, coping and quality of life. She developed the culturally sensitive Painometer, a patented pain assessment tool to assess pain and help people better communicate their pain. Her research has also included systematic descriptions of chronic pain, cancer and acute pain, and post-operative pain.
The Royal Society of Arts and Sciences is a scientific honor society started in 1778 and composed of 100 Swedish scientists and 45 international scientists from different disciplines classified in seven classes: mathematics and technology; physics; chemistry; biology; medicine; law and humanities; and theology, philosophy, and literature. Dr. Gaston-Johansson became the first nurse voted into this organization on December 13, 2004. She occupies one of the medical seats.
Dr. Gaston-Johansson received formal recognition for her excellence in science and international work with Sweden at a ceremony in City Hall in Goteborg, Sweden on January 24.
