Research coordinators—either new or experienced—now can access “Fundamentals for the Research Coordinator,” a course offered by the Johns Hopkins Research Coordinator Training Program (RCTP), either online or on-site at the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing.
The comprehensive course provides the research coordinator with a basic understanding of research ethics and federal regulations, informed consent process, data management, and other topics essential to a research project. Both the on-site, three-day format—next offered June 22-24, 2005—and the new convenient online program, which begins July 22, 2005, feature the same rich curriculum of training, resources, and opportunities. All online and on-site participants receive continuing education credit and a certificate.
The new online format was developed in collaboration with the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health (BSPH) Distance Education Division. The twelve topics in the course are divided into segments that allow students to tailor the course to fit their personal schedule, choosing when, which, and how many segments to view each session. Each segment features a slide show with audio presentation. Additional resources, web links, and articles are listed and printable for each topic. The online course is open to all who complete the prerequisite, “Introduction to Online Learning” (http://distance.jhsph.edu/oll), a free course offered by the BSPH Distance Education Division.
The RCTP is administered by the Institute for Johns Hopkins Nursing and sponsored by the Johns Hopkins University (JHU) Schools of Medicine, Nursing, and Public Health. The program courses are taught by JHU faculty and staff with diverse backgrounds and who represent a range of specialties. Students learn from experts who are Institutional Review Board and research administration staff and faculty, data managers, ethicists, project directors, and study coordinators currently working in research and who have hands-on, practical experience in human subject research.
