Four Hopkins Nursing Faculty Named Full Professor

In recognition of ongoing contributions to scholarship, teaching, professional practice, and academic/community service, the Johns Hopkins University (JHU) Board of Trustees this week named three JHU School of Nursing (SON) faculty members as full professors, Marion J. Ball, EdD, Victoria Mock, DNSc, RN, and Gayle Page, DNSc, RN. A fourth, Karen B. Haller, PhD, RN, was promoted in late 2004.

Marion J. Ball, EdD

Marion J. Ball, EdD, appointed to full professor, has served as an adjunct professor at the JHU SON since 1996 and also holds adjunct professorships at the JHU School of Medicine, Division of Health Sciences Informatics, and at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences. She is a member of the Institute for Medicine and the Board of Regents of the National Library of Medicine, and is Vice President of Clinical Informatics Strategies at Healthlink, Inc. Ball is the author of 17 books and hundreds of articles in the field of Health Informatics. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics with a minor in Computer Sciences and German from the University of Kentucky and a Master’s degree in Mathematics and Secondary Education and a Doctor of Education degree from Temple University.

Victoria Mock, DNSc, RN, FAAN, and Gayle Giboney Page, DNSc, RN, FAAN, both associate professors, were promoted to full professor. Mock is Director of both the JHU SON Center for Nursing Research and the School’s new Center for Collaborative Intervention Research. She also leads the SON collaborative doctoral nursing program with Peking Union Medical College and serves as Director of Nursing Research at the Kimmel Cancer Center at the Johns Hopkins Hospital (JHH). She holds a joint appointment in Oncology at the JHU School of Medicine and is internationally known for her research in symptom management for patients receiving cancer treatment. Mock received a Bachelor of Science in nursing from Duke University, a Master’s degree from the University of California, San Francisco, and a Doctor of Nursing Science from Catholic University in Washington, DC.

Page has been a JHU SON associate professor since 1998 and holds the Independence Foundation Chair in Nursing Education. She also serves as the Director of the School’s PhD program. Her highly acclaimed research focuses on pain management, stress, and cancer in animal models. She currently is investigating the impact of postnatal pain experiences on neuroendrocrine and immune response to stress in the mature animal. Page received a Bachelor of Science in nursing from California State College, a Master’s in Nursing and Doctor of Nursing Science from UCLA, and was a 1993 Postdoctoral Fellow in Biobehavioral Sciences at UCLA.

Karen B. Haller

Karen B. Haller, PhD, RN, FAAN, promoted to full professor in late 2004, is Vice President of Nursing and Patient Care Services at the JHH and is responsible for nursing professional practice and clinical standards at the Hospital, overseeing a nursing staff of 1,850. Haller also serves as the SON Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs and has been an associate professor since 1989. She has published over 100 articles and editorials, conducted NIH-funded research on end-of-life decision making, and for 10 years served with distinction as editor of the Journal of Obstetric, Gynecologic, and Neonatal Nursing. Haller earned her Bachelor’s, Master of Nursing, Master of Public Health, and Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
